Bachelor's Thesis

As young boy I had the vision of the future ruled by interactive 3D items all over the internet ready to be sold for the sake of shopping. Besides my passion for design as the main ingredient of this thesis, I had the chance to have a long talk with Flavio Fontana, who worked along with Tim Berners Lee to build the World Wide Web, back in the 90s! Yes indeed, I met him personally in 2003, when he was working at ENEA in Rome.

As you would say - How come?? Easy. He’s my brother in laws’ cousin. We talked and discussed all day long about the innovation going on in the web community and he showed me his first version of a 3D browser prototype (pretty rough if you think about it now). Not to mention that he kindly showed me loads of paper documents jammed in this locker … documents about the birth of World Wide Web he worked on with T. B. Lee 😮 What a honour, ladies and gentleman! I got astonished by the advance of web technology, of course. Also, at that time I was looking or a subject to work on for my thesis, and all of sudden I felt like making a stand “This is it, I got it!” Web and 3D will be.

Later on, the idea of Kepher was born, as I took the passion of flight and design (as I quit the Air Force Academy before applying to the Academy of Fine Arts). With this combo mix in my mind, I produced a very extensive full 3D modeling compositions, wrote storyboarding and video-edited to create the short video teaser Back to Moon, around 2006. Two years later I conceived and developed a game concept along with another short video, the sequel New America.

Kepher is the thesis i presented at the end of my journey in the Academy of Fine Arts. Produced a book entitled A look at the future of 3D Modeling from Aeronautics to Astronautics. The book presents a comprehensive view of the world of Computer Graphics 3D. How this subject was born out of man’s imagination, its development throughout history until today, and what’s to come. The last chapter of the book focuses on a Sci-Fi 3D interactive web application, that has anticipated modern interaction system used today by many shops online.

Web

The entire result obtained from the 3D production was summarized in the web development phase with the construction of a futuristic interface capable of hosting the kepher theme

Video

The Kepher theme was also meant to be broadcast via the video channel. The intent was to convey the message that in the near future humanity would undertake the colonization of the Moon, and that then from this satellite they would use the lunar base as a starting point for the next destination, Mars.

Video Design

In the video production I took care of creating and editing the trailer videos directly in the 3D environment, dividing them into separate scenes for each phase of the mini story.

Trailer

The final result of the entire Kepher project ended with a video trailer of no more than 3 minutes, a prototype aimed at stimulating the creation of a future science fiction film or a futuristic video game. Chopin's music created a calm rhythm with dancing audio-visual counterpoints and with an evident tribute to the film A Space Odyssey,

Book

As a whole, the creation of a book of over 300 pages was also undertaken to represent the theme of Interaction Design, endorsing scientific theses combined with those of fantasy. The last chapter represented the Kepher project with the theme of history, motivations and technical explanations of the work execution

The choice of the chapter was born from the union of two passions, design and flight. In fact, in 2004 I was undertaking an internship at the Aeronautical Academy of Pozzuoli, Naples, as an aspiring pilot cadet. Following this experience, I then pursued the other passion, that of drawing. The reason for the high chapters is to be found in my curiosity to fully understand the reality that has surrounded us for over 40 thousand years, thus exploring fields of study that are forbidden according to the will of academic history, but which Hollywood has continuously represented us with explanatory films for many years.

Printmaking

The printing process was done in one day at the print shop. Two copies went to the Academy of Fine Arts and two more I have kept in my archived projects.

I used a copy of the book as a business card during my job interviews in the United States around 2008. The same book also helped me demonstrate my skills for any qualification validations in American universities

Packaging

Along with the book in the inside back cover there was also the CD-Rom containing part of the project for offline navigation. In fact, I also took care of producing the packaging on the Kepher style line

Trailer

The final result of the whole process was so represented by a video trailer about 2 minutes. The music added a more dramatic cadence than the original trailer, Back To Moon. Time is running out and the project to transfer human knowledge elsewhere in space is the priority to be pursued
